If you’ve read a few of my blogs on professional content writing, you know that I like to be really honest about its ups and downs. Sometimes I worry that I make it sound like I don’t enjoy what I do, which is very much not the case. So, today I’m very excited to tell you all about what I love most about my job.

My favourite things about life as a professional writer

When I started making my list, I realized that some of the things that I loved most surprised me. Here are some of the top perks that I found:

• Even on the bad days, it’s still better than a classic job: While there are days where I’m tired and don’t feel like typing, working on creating content is still much better than even the most appealing traditional 9-5 job. Currently, I work 7 days a week, and each day is packed with deadlines and customers. As tiring as that can get, it’s still so much better than heading out to do a job that doesn’t fulfill me.

• I get to shop and learn as a bonus to actual writing: I write many things, of course, my favourites being product description writing and blog writing. One of the hidden perks to business content writing is that I essentially get paid to shop and write while I’m at it. That’s not to say that I take advantage of it, of course, but it is a nice perk to fattening up my online shopping cart come holiday season! When it comes to blog writing, you can think of me as your walking-talking Wikipedia page. I know all sorts of random information about, well, everything. If I can’t find an answer to something, I know where to find it! It’s great when someone around me needs to know something fast.

• I get to fill the online world with genuine content: This is something that I’m really passionate about. There is a lot of content available that is scraped from a competitor or “written” by a spinning engine. It gives content writing a bad name since many average online readers don’t realize what’s going on behind the scenes. I manually write every single word that I deliver. Is it always loved by my customers? Of course not. Sometimes it might even be a piece of crap. But it’s genuinely and authentically my piece of crap.

• Practicing and honing my craft daily: Working as a full-time business content writer doesn’t give me much time to work on my own personal writing. But I always like knowing that I put focus, time, and effort into honing my craft daily.  

Writing is my soul

As is the case for many creatives, writing is so much a part of me that it feels like a true honour to get to work with it every single day. I remember getting so excited back in university that I actually got to write. It was considered homework rather than “a waste of time.” While I always enjoyed school, getting to write stories and draft content was a dream come true. I’d deliberately do all of my other homework first so that I could “save the best for last.”
