On a wooden table sit Scrabble tiles. Centred in the photo are tiles reading out "BLOG POST".I originally got my start as a content writer, specifically as a blog writer. While I have expanded beyond that over the years, I’ve always had a soft spot for writing blogs for customers. In honour of acknowledging my roots as a professional writer, I thought it best to put forward the top 4 things that every good blog post needs to resonate with readers. Any guesses on what I’m going to include? Read on to see if you’re right.

The 4 most important things for a strong blog post

In no particular order, below are the 4 most important parts of a well-written blog post. These can apply to personal blog writing and also — if not, especially — to commercial blog writing for a client and brand.

1 A singular topic

To be honest with you all, I didn’t think this particular point was going to make the list when I originally planned the blog post. The reason is that it seems obvious. However, I’ve been tempted to blend multiple topics into a singular blog post before, and I’ve also been asked to do so by clients. So, a blog post about Topic A should be solely about Topic A, rather than Topic A-C.

2 Cross-linking opportunities

Even though you are “limited” to Topic A, it doesn’t mean that you can’t mention Topics B, C, or F. You just do it through cross-linking. Cross-linking is absolutely my favourite part about professional blog writing, and it’s something that I really advocate for as an experienced freelance writer. Not only does it show that you know your stuff, but it also helps readers gather more information that they are interested in.

3 A clear blogging strategy

Whether you are writing a personal or commercial blog, you will want to have a strategy for your blog as a whole. This would include a general post length, a post format, and a posting schedule. This makes the search engines happy, which is important to those who want to rank in search engines, but it is also really important for developing and fostering reader trust. They want to know what they will find when they click through to your blog each time.

4 Researched keywords and SEO tactics

No professional blog would be complete without putting into practice SEO tactics and strategies. This includes keyword research, competitor research, and learning about the most recent updates and changes to SEO best practices. In all honesty, AI blog writers have changed things in this world, but my professional opinion is that SEO is still critical for human blog writers, too!

A blog post is more than just a conversation

Much like most parts of business content writing, there is a lot more going on with writing a blog post than originally meets the eye. From start to finish, a well-written blog post helps you connect with your readers in a way that is going to show them who you are, for better or worse.

Fellow freelancers and blog writers, what do you think? Are there any points you want to add or correct? Let me know below!
