Ask the Writer: what got you started in professional writing?

A red-headed toddler with facing away fro the camera in a brown shirt and jeans. They are wearing a lion shaped backpack. As I’ve talked about briefly before, I came pretty late into writing. It started out with a short story scribbled on the back of a piece of homework, rewriting the ending of a novel I’d read that hadn’t ended the way I wanted it to. Fast forward 16 years, and I’m now a full-time professional business content writer. How did I get here? I’m so excited to have received this question to address it!

The role of writing in my life throughout the years

Almost as soon as I wrote that new ending, I was hooked. Writing became the reason why I got up in the morning, and it was all that I thought about. It became my life’s goal to write. Not for any particular reason, but just because it felt right for me in a way that nothing else did. Here’s how it progressed:

  • From a hobby to a passion: Writing was a hobby for precisely 2 weeks, but quickly became my passion. As someone who was impossibly awkward expressing myself verbally and in person, writing gifted me with the capability to express what I felt almost effortlessly. Whether through the guise of a character, or straight writing communicated in printed form, I found my way of engaging with the world.
  • From a passion to my education focus: As I honed my skill, page after page, and from short stories to fanfiction to novels, I decided that I wanted to dedicate my life and education to pursue it. I chose a school that allowed me to do as much as possible, and I engaged with it in a way that I hadn’t with other subjects. Each semester proved to me that I was pursuing the right goals.
  • From education to career: A classmate led me to a freelancing platform that would help me “earn some cash” while completing my last year of school. I had always been a creative writer, so testing out business content writing was foreign. It didn’t take long for me to get hooked, and that’s how Kelterss was born!

The bottom line: I can’t imagine doing anything else

There’s this recurring line that you hear from professionals in their trades for all kinds, which is some variation of what I just said: I can’t imagine doing anything else. It’s so cliche and so simple. But it’s true.

Even though the “how” of my career as a professional writer may change throughout the years, as any naturally progressing career path would, I will always be a writer in some form. Whether continuing to be a freelance business writer, managing a team of business content writers, or consulting on professional writing, writing will always be my chosen career path because there is no other alternative for me.

Next time, I’m honoured to announce that you’ll be treated to a wonderful guest post that is loaded full of facts and information about how to grow your business. It’s a beautiful, engaging read, and I know all of you will love it! I’m also still accepting questions for future “Ask the Writer” posts and would love for you to send me questions!
