It’s an understatement to say that our workforce is changing forever due to the prominence of technology.  It’s really interesting to take a look at online job positions, now and see that they’re becoming more and more standard.  However, our work world has changed in more than just that form over the years!  In fact, the modern world is dramatically changing the way that we work!  Take a look.

Working in the modern world

Holding a job position in the modern world is certainly tenuous, but it is possible!  However, just “how” we do that is changing drastically that it makes the “old” way almost feel like it was in another world!

• Remote learning and working are now mainstream: Back in the day, everyone had to go to a physical classroom to even consider learning a proper academic curriculum or earn a paycheque.  Now that’s sooo last year.  Remote learning and working is now the normal way of doing things and people of all ages are loving it!  Instead of your home just being a space that you pay a lot of money for but don’t spend much time in, it’s your central hub.

• It’s rare to have the same career for 35 years: It was normal to simply get into a job and stay there, hopefully getting promoted and earning more money and responsibility, until you retired after 35+ years.  Now, it’s totally normal to just veer off of one career after ten years and then start another for another ten years, and so-on.  It’s so great to know that if you have a mid-life crisis and suddenly decide you absolutely have to be a florist after being a lawyer for the last 8 years, you can do it.  Changing your mind is no longer a death sentence when it comes to earning a living wage!  Scary?  Yes.  Relieving?  Also yes.

• Online jobs are now actually profitable: It wasn’t so long ago that working from home was considered pocket money.  Or, working online was a hobby when your “real” job wasn’t giving you enough money.  Now, though, having a career online is totally normal and do-able, even if it doesn’t look quite the same as a traditional job with a cubicle and bad fluorescent lighting.  

We’re changing too

When it comes to the workforce and understanding our role within it, it’s neat to see that we are making the changes that we want to make, too.  For instance, 20 years ago, there was no way I would have been able to earn a living as a business content writer.  Were there business content writing jobs available?  Yes!  But, they were highly coveted and often an in-house position only.  Now freelancers get a chance to at least put a bid in on the job and it opens up the marketplace to people all over the world!

While some changes in the world may not be quite as good, it is reassuring to see that not all of them are bad, either!  The way that we work is changing forever and, when it comes to freelance job positions, this is a good thing!  Anything to share?  Please do!
