The best things about being a freelancer

Paper boats on a surface. There is a large red one, two smaller blue ones behind it and then 2 smaller teal ones behind those.
With the world evolving the way it is, there are a lot of cool jobs out there that you can try.  The most interesting jobs according to Trade Schools are: a bounty hunter, an ethical hacker, a video game tester and a waterslide tester.  Sure, most of those sound nothing short of amazing, but I’ve got an even better one: being a freelancer.

Stop laughing, being a freelancer is cool!  It doesn’t quite have the same prestige as “professional waterslide tester”, I’ll admit, but being a freelancer has some cool perks that you won’t find in another profession.

The best things about being a freelancer

Truth be told, there are a lot of amazing reasons to be a freelancer, so it took a while to narrow it down to a handful of reasons.  Here are what I consider to be the top 3 reasons to be a freelancer long-term.

  • A freelancer could be anything: If you have the title of freelance, it could be anything.  Some of the ones you hear about the most are freelance journalist, freelance photographer, and, of course, freelance writer.  But, applying this tag means that you are your own person and you aren’t attached to any particular company or agency.  Go ahead and become a freelance dog walker if you want to!  No rule says freelancing has to be applied to “official” positions only.
  • You get to be in control of your job: No more working the daily grind for not nearly enough money!  Well, kinda.  When you are a freelancer, you choose which jobs you take and which ones you pass on.  Sure, you have to keep the lights and heat on, but knowing that you don’t have to take on every possible job that crosses your path can be a huge benefit to consider.  This is especially helpful when you get to be in the business for a few years and know what you like and don’t like as far as customers and jobs.
  • You build your business how you want to: Regardless of what background you come from, you can design and grow your business how you decide is best for you.  We all tend to have some sort of idea of what we want to do with our jobs, and being a freelancer means that you get to decide in what direction to grow your business: do you want to be a big fish in a small pond?  Are you more interested in staying behind the scenes and working with the locals in your area?  You get to choose your target audience and your business ethics, amongst other details.

While being a freelancer doesn’t involve legal hacking or hunting down a man on the run, there are still some pretty cool details about this professional way of life that deserve their kudos.  With the freedom of being a freelancer, however, maybe you could find a way to become a freelance waterslide tester…how cool would that be?
