While working as a full-time professional writer isn’t considered a dangerous job, there is a fair amount of wear and tear on the body. In the past 11 years, I’ve noticed the hours of typing taking its toll on my hands, back, and eyes. I ignored those issues at first, since I thought it meant I had to give up writing. My 3 favourite supports for writing full-time
Here are the essential writer tools in my kit to support my long work days, clickity-clacking away.
- Orthopaedic chair: I resisted this for many years because they’re expensive. They’re also uncomfortable…at first. After a lot of “test-sitting” (yes, that’s a real thing), I found the right chair for me. It has lots of adjustment options and is minimally uncomfortable even during the adjustment period. I’ve been using my orthopaedic chair for 7 years now, and I notice that my back, hips, neck, and shoulders are much happier for it!
- Ring braces: The more years that pass with me typing day in and day out, the more my finger joints need support. I had never heard of ring braces until I watched a Reel of a real-life user who explained how they work and their benefits. After getting a very affordable set for myself, I was convinced that these were the best things ever. I still think so. While they can take some time to get used to, especially for sizing, these are amazing supports for writers!
- Eye drops: For one reason or another, I’ve always hated the idea of eye drops. Since eye strain is a real issue, however, I’ve gotten myself adjusted to using them as needed. These can help with the overall appearance of your bloodshot eyes and, more importantly, their comfort! These are also very affordable and great for your eye health in general.
Professional care is more than just therapy devices, writer tools
While these tools for writers are great for helping me enjoy a more comfortable working day, they’re only part of the equation. I firmly believe that self-care as a business writer, especially from a body’s perspective, is critical for a long, healthy professional career.
I’ve spoken many times about most of these, but I’ll introduce them again briefly in case you missed them! Firstly, the importance of taking time off can’t be understated. You need to rest your brain and body to remain clear-headed and focused.
Next on the list is understanding how to schedule long-term and large projects so that you aren’t getting stressed out from an out-of-control queue.
Lastly, being honest with yourself and those around you about the struggles of professional freelancing. There’s no shame in it, and simply letting off some steam by talking about it really helps!
