As you already know from my blog, I’m a freelance writer. Sometimes, I’m still surprised that I ended up writing business content because I love fiction and have a background in creative writing. But making money as a freelancer is easier and more reliable than writing novels that earn enough to live on. The truth is that earning money as a freelancer changes a lot. It’s not as reliable as a classic 9-5 job. But you can do it. Here’s my approach to it.
Making money from freelance writing
First, answer the most crucial question: Can you make money freelance writing? Yes, definitely. That’s why I talked about freelancing so much in my post on how to make money as a writer. Let’s look deeper at how to make money from freelance writing.
- Specialize in a niche: As I discuss in my book, taking the time to specialize in a topic or a writing niche can be a great way to upsell yourself and show your potential clients that you are dedicated to your craft. Professionally, I specialize in topics like health and fitness, dog psychology, and crafting. My specialty in writing niches is product descriptions. Clients often find that hiring a freelancer with specified niches can help build trust!
- Prioritize your portfolio: An up-to-date portfolio is essential for proving your skills as a professional. When creating my portfolio, I worked hard to showcase my most popular niches and the best content within each. I used actual content I had written for clients in the past (with their permission) and had it organized so each prospective client could go through and find the writing samples they were looking for,
- Don’t set your prices too low: This is one I learned recently. Low-priced freelance writers are excellent choices when you have a minimal budget, to be sure. However, having a higher yet fair rate listed helps show that you are “worth it.” With a higher rate, your customers will get what they pay for. On that note, be transparent about what you do and do not offer within that rate, and this way, there will be no surprises. As an added bonus, a higher rate means you don’t need to work as much as you would when setting a bargain price.
- Keep up to date on your industry: Knowledge is power, and it’s crucial power to have when working in a competitive industry like freelance writing. From SEO best practices to writing tones to niche education, staying current is essential to help you continuously offer the best professional writing service!
Freelancing money is out there
While it might feel like you can never get your foot in the door for freelancing income, you definitely can with the proper steps to get you there. Most of my advice is about building up your own professionalism and education. Realistically, nothing I’ve shared today is new information. But there’s a reason why you read about these kinds of things from multiple sources; they work.
That’s just my point of view. What do you all think? Do you agree or disagree? Do you have any other tips you’d like to share?
