3 things to say to a writer

So this is a little biased, obviously, but writers are some pretty cool people!  Out of nothing more than 26 letters, writers can create entire universes with characters and stories that will bring readers to tears.  Yet despite this truly awe-inspiring talent, there are many well-intentioned people out there (many of whom may be readers themselves) who don’t appreciate this effort.

3 supportive things to say to a writer you love

If you’ve got a writer in your life that you want to support, there are plenty of ways that you can do that. There are the obvious things like buying their book and boasting about how awesome they are to everyone you know.  But you can show them your support and appreciation using your words, too.  Here are 3 things to say to a writer you believe in:

  • “Your writing moved me”: Writers of all kinds want to know that what they’re creating makes a difference. Whether it’s gut-wrenching, dark literature, or funny, sentimental business copy, it’s all got a goal. If a writer made you stop and think about what they wrote, make sure they know that!
  • “It must take a lot of time/energy to write as you do”: The first time that someone said this to me, I cried.  There are some days where creating content leaves writers feeling raw and out-of-sorts long after they’ve finished typing.  There are also times where they’ll spend hours or days on one single paragraph because it’s that important to get just right.  Showing a writer that you know how hard and time-consuming writing must be means a whole lot more than you’d imagine.  There are a lot of people out there that think writing is as simple as sitting down and starting to type until they reach the end.  But, writing convincing sales copy or heart-pounding cliffhangers is about finding just the right words to grab onto a reader’s heart and holding it captive without you even being aware it’s happened.  Or, perhaps something a little less creepy…
  • “Are you writing?  Okay, I won’t bother you”: This, my dear readers, is perfection.  Some writers work in a dedicated office with a computer. Others work on the living room floor with a pen and notebook. Still, others prefer using voice to text technology while they bake a batch of cookies.  However, whenever and wherever you find your writer creating, leave them be!  It’s a creative process that is all-too-easily disrupted by idle chatter or the sudden blasting of the radio/TV.

Writers work hard, okay?!

There’s a lot of physical, emotional and mental effort that goes into writing, be it business writing or creative writing, and that deserves respect and support.  Even if you don’t 100% understand why writing is as precise a process as it is, please show your writer how much you support them!

  1. This post made me realize I am a bad person. I want and love when people say these things, and more, to me. But I am too petty to say them to another person because I am jealous and competitive. I commend you for being generous and kind enough to spread the love.

    • Real talk: we are jealous and petty of each other and I’ve definitely had my moments! However, we all share the same love for words and it’s always nice to communicate that when you feel comfortable doing so. The keyword, though, is “comfortable”. You are NOT a bad person! You’ve just not had quite the right moment to be comfortable enough to say those things yet! Who knows, maybe this will give you some inspiration when the situation does present itself!
